On the evening of March 22, 2024, a breathtaking classical music concert, 【Music Across Borders】, was staged at the Kennedy Music Hall in Washington, D.C. Chinese musical prodigy Tianyi Shen, together with talented young artists Xingzhou Rong, Xinyi Huangwan, and Ying Li from the Yale School of Music, delivered a spectacular performance. This concert marked the first stop of their global tour. The concert also featured a special guest performance by renowned soprano Beibei Guan from the Greater Washington area. Hosted by the US-China Association of Commerce, the concert brought a wave of classical music to the Greater Washington audience, filling the venue to capacity. We were honored to have the presence of Minister Counselor Jing Quan and his delegation from the Chinese Embassy in the United States, whose attendance was a great encouragement and support to the artists.

The performance team, deeply rooted in Chinese cultural sentiments and inspired by Yale's global vision, is dedicated to sharing the beauty of classical music worldwide and preserving its profound cultural influence. This concert showcased the essence of both Chinese and Western classical music genres, including masterpieces such as Charles-Marie Widor’s “Introduction and Rondo for Clarinet,” Zhang Zhao’s “Yellow Earth,” and Aram Khachaturian’s trio, representing Gypsy culture, the Armenia region, and Uzbekistan. Other classical masterpieces included Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst’s “The Last Rose of Summer,” Max Bruch’s “Eight Pieces, Op. 83,” and more.

Clarinetist Tianyi Shen mesmerized the audience with his performance. Shen, who was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music with the top global score in 2015 and Yale School of Music in 2021, has collaborated with maestros like Zubin Mehta and world-renowned orchestras such as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. David Shifrin, Clarinet Professor at Yale School of Music and Artistic Director of Yale Chamber Music Society, praised Tianyi Shen as "an exceptionally talented clarinetist with a beautiful tone, expressive style, and impressive technique." During this concert, Shen performed classic pieces such as Charles-Marie Widor’s “Introduction and Rondo for Clarinet,” Aram Khachaturian’s compositions, Wu Zhang’s “Variation on Subei Tune,” and Max Bruch’s “Eight Pieces, Op. 83.”

Pianist Ying Li, dressed in a golden gown, elegantly complemented the harmonious notes that flowed from her fingers, filling the hall with musical enchantment. Violinist Xingzhou Rong passionately presented Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst’s “The Last Rose of Summer,” a work inspired by Irish poet Thomas Moore's 1805 poem and later transcribed for solo violin by Ernst in 1865. Violist Xinyi Huangwan brought a vibrant and enthusiastic performance, especially with Johan Halvorsen’s “Passacaglia,” which showcased the fusion of Baroque and Romantic virtuoso styles. Soprano Beibei Guan's appearance electrified the audience, delivering lively renditions of “Mayira Variations” and the deeply moving “Song of Hometown” by German composer Carl Kreutzer. The artists’ profound understanding and expressive interpretation of the music captivated the audience, with each note conveying deep emotion and charm, demonstrating the sincerity and beauty of music.

At the end of the performance, the artists took the stage to bow and thank the audience amidst resounding applause and flowers. Du Tang, the Artistic Director of the concert and President of the Washington Musicians Association, also took the stage to express his gratitude. The success of this concert, from planning and preparation to its perfect presentation, was made possible by the professional guidance of Mr. Tang and the dedicated efforts of the Chamber staff and Georgetown University volunteers working behind the scenes.

The concert's organizer, the United States-China Association of Commerce (USCAC), is committed to promoting friendly relations between China and the United States through cultural activities and exchange programs. The successful staging of this concert is also due to the love and recognition of classical music by people from all walks of life in Washington, D.C. We look forward to bringing more high-quality performances in the future to foster cultural and commercial exchanges between the people of China and the United States! [...]
